Student Survival Guide
Natalie Macklin
Axia College of University of Phoenix
A Student Survival Guide is a practical and useful tool for students who want to achieve their academic goals. This Student Survival Guide will discuss and give examples regarding the topic discussion assigned for this paper. Axia College has different samples of resources that is useful an Axia College student. One of the resource tools the I always use and beneficial is the Axia Center Writing Excellence.
It has given me a better understanding of grammar and plagiarism when submitting my papers. There are also other resources such as Center for Mathematics Excellence, University Library, Course Syllabus, Course Calendar, and Audio & Visual tutorials. These references can be found at the ecampus for Axia College of University of Phoenix.
Axia College also provides an online library that is useful to distance learning students. This allows distance learning student’s to research journal articles, scholarly books and different source of educational material. I have found the University Library to be very helpful. It allows me to save money from going to a library, and personal time.
I believe every distant learning student from Axia College can benefit from what I have listed above for educational resources. Each Axia College student has the same resources; it is the student’s choice to use the references the Axia College has provided. The educational resources I have stated are important elements for helping a student to survive his/her undergraduate studies.
Academic honesty plays a major role in a student’s path t success. As in life and educational status honesty is crucial and critical. Academic honesty is a respected characteristic that a student carries throughout his/her academic career.
Work presented to the instructor should possess the quality of originality a student should at least write 85% of the paper and cite the other 15% to meet Axia College requirements. Should a student choose to cite scholarly work written by another individual he/she should give credit to the author. For example; Axia College Writing Style Handbook has been a very helpful educational tool for me. It is easily written and provides a student with American Psychological Association (APA) style of writing. However, it discusses the importance of paraphrasing another student’s work. Paraphrasing is simply taking information into your words and shortening the paragraph to your understanding.
Managing time wisely and effectively is also a beneficial tool to use when achieving a degree. Managing time effectively involves patience, planning, and dedication.
Setting and achieving goals are crucial to the success of a student majority of student’s entering a program have short term goals and long-term goals. An example of a short term goal is making it your business to apply to a college. An example of long-term goal may be to complete your Master’s degree while maintaining a 3.5 or 4.0 grade point average. In setting both short and long-term goals make sure you maintain a concept of time or a completion date when you might achieve your goals.
Setting a practical time log will help you achieve your short term goal easily. For example; an Axia student may have a short term goal for completing a free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by a couple months before starting classes. Keep your goals simple, this will help a student achieve goals with a better ease. Recording goal or a plan in a note book or on a note pad will help you strive towards meeting your goal.
Being flexible to achieve different goals are important. Sometimes life events my briefly effect a student’s with multiple goals. When this transpires happen he or she must give themselves time to achieve the goal.
Learning how to balance time is important to being successful in the academic field. I refer to my course syllabus to keep me on track of the assignments and days they are due. I also plan out my week by viewing the course calendar and submitting my work on time every Monday. The above items helped me to stay on track of my educational regards. I also write down a list of things on my calendar to remind me when each day an assignment is due. By practicing this tool I maintained to keep my assignments organized and grades on point.
Fostering reading comprehension and retention is another important skill that should be possessed. Reading comprehension doesn’t always come easy, it requires a good deal of patience and focus. I think the SQ3R worksheet helps me with hold what I read because I can evaluate the way I study with this process.
In order for a student to understand a subject that has been assigned he/she must look for a quiet place, which procedures minimal noise/interruptions. It is also good to be in an area that is comfortable especially to read an assigned reading. A student should eat, block out the noise, and focus on the assigned reading material.
I feel like it is important t write down information during the process of retention. This is a skill that has been helpful to me so I can retain and commit to information I have absorbed. Every student should master this skill if he/she has not done already. This key element should be in possession in his/her Student Survival Guide book. This can help you maintain your own academic progress.
Personality can help or hurt a student’s academic ability in a classroom. For example; if a student is pessimistic by nature and always view the cup as half empty instead of half full he/she is most likely two steps behind. However, if the student is optimistic and always views the cup as half full as opposed to half empty he/she stands to achieve a better academic success.
In addition learning styles also reflect and incorporate a student’s personality style. Once a student has mastered a skill it should be easy to bypass the obstacles that are in your way of accomplishing your goals to finish you academic career.
